🌱 Dartmouth Weed Busters: Community Action for a Cleaner, Greener Town

Dartmouth is a beautiful place — full of character, history, and pride. But keeping it looking its best is no longer something the council handles for cosmetic reasons. That’s where Dartmouth Weed Busters comes in.

Supported by River Dart Rotary, the volunteer group has been quietly working away since 2022, completing more than 110 weeding sessions across the town’s streets, paths, and public spaces. What started as a small initiative has grown into a vital community effort.

As Jonathan Needs, who runs the group, puts it:

“We’re proud of what’s been achieved. But if we want Dartmouth to look its best, it has to become a shared effort.”

💬 Why We Need Community Action

Devon County Council has confirmed that it no longer treats weeds for aesthetic reasons, stepping in only when there’s a hazard or structural risk. That means the everyday weeds — the ones that make streets look untidy — are left to grow unless someone takes action.

Founder Alan Depledge explains the challenge:

“People still assume this is being taken care of. But it isn’t. Council tax no longer pays for cosmetic weeding, so the question is: what do we want our town to look like?”

The answer, the group believes, lies in a simple idea:

Lots of people doing a little bit makes a big difference.

If every resident cleared the area outside their home, and every business took responsibility for their shopfront, Dartmouth would look dramatically better — without needing large teams or specialist equipment.

The Weed Busters are encouraging everyone to get involved, even in small ways. Their practical advice is straightforward:

• Treat weeds early

• Allow time for them to weaken

• Remove them by hand

• Retreat later to prevent regrowth

As Needs says:

“You don’t need specialist equipment or expertise — just a bit of effort in the right place at the right time.”

🌿 A New Name, A Clearer Purpose

To help spread the message, the group has adopted a new name: Weed Busters. It’s clearer, more direct, and makes it easier for people to understand what the group does — and how they can join in.

The group continues to run flexible volunteer sessions throughout the year. You can get involved in several ways:
